What is the purpose of 'browning' meat and how important is it?

Before cooking a pork or other meats in a crock pot or in the oven sometimes it calls for 'browning' the meat in a frying pan first. Why and is it okay not to? Sorry, may be a stupid question but I am a male not familiar with cooking other than toast and cereal! Thanks
