What kind of surf boar should I start out on?

I'm planning on learning how 2 surf next summer, and I was wondering what kind of board I should get. The waves I'm going to be surfing are generally small (being in North Carolina we don't generally get that much wave action), but I don't think that will make a difference. Would it?
