Surfing in San Francisco?

I'm a surfer in North Western Oregon. I'm heading for San Francisco on August 1st and I hear that surfing is pretty neat there. But I don't know what gear to bring. Should I bring a wetsuit? Is the ocean water cold in San Francisco? My surfboard won't fit in the car I'm going in though so I'm going to have to rent one. I'm just woundering if surfing in the summer requires any gear.
